Marshall Applewhite
Cult leader, professor. Born in 1931. With Bonnie Nettles, Marshall Herff Applewhite created a religious cult commonly known as Heaven's Gate.In 1997, he led his followers to commit suicide in hopes of being transported onto a spaceship traveling with Hale-Bopp comet.
Joseph Di Mambro
Co-founder of the Order of the Solar Temple. Joseph Di Mambro, along with Belgian homeopathic doctor Luc Jouret, led scores of their followers to their deaths -- and likely ordered the killings of others -- in October 1994.
Jim Jones
Paranoia and extreme beliefs led to bizarre sexual cults, with members who assassinated a congressman in the 70s and committed mass suicide at Jonestown, Guyana in 1978.
